Empleo > Software Engineer, Developer or Data Scientist
Cortical.io is a start-up focusing on semantic text processing, headquartered in Vienna with a subsidiary in the USA. We are looking for software engineers/developers and/or data scientists to work alongside our technical team in central Vienna on internal and customer projects.
Our working environment is relaxed and diverse, with a pleasant office and flexible working arrangements - and probably the best Espresso machine in central Europe. All our communication is in English because quite a few of us (including our otherwise brilliant Spanish employees) don't speak German. Since our subsidiary and many of our customers are located in the USA, we are sometimes required to work a bit later than usual (but then also start later as compensation).
As members of the technical team we prototype algorithms in Java or Scala; write production code in these languages, almost all of it server-side; administer Spark clusters and Zeppelin servers, often on AWS; perform text-centric data analyses, typically using machine learning approaches, both for internally motivated research-heavy projects on our core technology or to address concrete customer requirements; sometimes, but rarely, we write web UIs in JavaScript; we often summarise our data analysis findings in reports for customers.
We follow a project-centric, structured, Scrum-inspired approach to all these activities, but being a start-up we strive to keep it pragmatic, low-key and unobtrusive.
If you feel comfortable in such a setting and are interested in the domain of natural language processing and the technologies we use, then we would love to hear from you! You need not be an expert in all (or even most) of the areas mentioned above, as we have the flexibility to mentor you and help you learn and grow. However, there are a few prerequisites which we do require, because it would be impractical to acquire them on-the-job: - You must have hands-on experience with Java and/or Scala software development and the standard tooling in that space (Git, SVN, Mercurial or similar; Maven, SBT, Ant, Gradle or similar; Eclipse, IDEA, Netbeans or similar). - You must have a Bachelor's degree in a technical or scientific field, but we would prefer if you had continued your studies beyond that. - You must be comfortable with fundamental statistical concepts (distributions, sampling, correlation, clustering). - Your verbal and written English communication skills must be such that you are not overwhelmed by a purely English working environment.
We are looking for full-time (or close to full-time) permanent employees who are EU citizens or have a work permit for Austria or the EU as a whole.
Please contact Sylvia Selwood at s.selwood@cortical.io to apply. We'll then be in touch with an invitation to a video chat, and, if mutual interest persists, we'll have a second in-depth interview, ideally face-to-face, which will conclude the interview process.
